SaskMade e-News: October 2016

From the "fields" of SaskMade -

I can't believe Thanksgiving is just around the corner and before you know it, Halloween, then Christmas and then it's 2017. Let's all take a deep breath and try to stay calm.

We have had a busy month here at the store and it's only going to get busier as we head into the holiday season. There are events happening, baskets to be made and shelves to stock!

Speaking of stock, new in are ready made meals from Pitch Kitchen- to help make those weeknights just a little easier. Another new product to note are the Kicker's seasoned boneless dry ribs. You can find them in the freezer in four fantastic flavours. We are also still receiving our weekly delivery of fresh produce, greens & eggs.

Last on the agenda, our Kickoff to Chrsitmas will be held on Saturday, November 12th from 11-3pm. It will be a day of family fun and festivites. There will be plenty to eat, prizes to win and contests to play. Mark your calendar and bring the whole family down!

SaskMade's Quick Table Pickle Recipe

Ingredients:
1/4 cup vinegar - we have used sea buckthorn vinegar and flavoured apple cider vinegars
1 cup water
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt

Directions:
Mix all the ingredients together. Add more salt and sugar to taste if needed. Finely slice up a cucumber. Add to the liquid and give it a stir. Feel free to add other veggies and herbs to mix it up!

For best results, let it sit for a few hours in the fridge.

From the "fields" of SaskMade -

The evening air is beginning to chill and the leaves are starting to turn which can only mean one thing - fall is right around the corner. School has begun, kids' activities will be starting up soon and the relaxing, lazy days of summer are gone.

With all this talk of fall, we are gearing up for our Ready Made Meal season. We have a variety of local ingredients and meal options, that are specifically geared towards making those busy weeknights a little easier. We currently have pizzas, pasta, perogies, cabbage rolls, sausage, fish, etc. AND we are expanding our Ready Made options for even more meals you can quickly pop into the oven, which are still healthy and nutritious.

SaskMade is also trying something new this year. You will be able to pre-order your Pineview Farms Thanksgiving & Christmas turkeys from us. There will be a limited number available and a deposit will be required. Delivery will be the week before the holiday. Please stay tuned via our social media outlets for more information as it comes available.

Recipes from our Sour Cherry Festival - in case you missed it.

Cherry Bacon Jam

Ingredients:

350g Everyday Farms Frozen Tart Cherries (1/2 bag)

1 pkg bacon (suggest using cherry wood smoked)

2 tbsp liquid honey (to taste)


Directions:
Thaw and drain off some of the juice from the cherries. Cook the cherries in the remainder of the juice on top of the stove until they break down and all the liquid is gone. Cook the bacon in the oven on a parchment lined pan @ 400F. Cool both the bacon and cherries. Place the cherries, bacon and honey in a food processor and chop until it's a spreadable consistency. Refrigerate for 2 hours.

Serve with crackers & cream cheese, or tortilla chips.
